Are You Designing Your Cisco Network?

Written December 2007

Are you designing your network? Here is a brief list of ten design tips to remember as you take on this task as pointed out by Ron Gilster, the author of Cisco Networking for Dummies:

  1. "Determine the Users' Needs

  2. Document the Existing Network

  3. Determine the Appropriate Structure

  4. Create a Network Drawing

  5. Choose the Hardware and Media

  6. Select Routing and Switching Protocols

  7. Choose the Operating System

  8. Document the New Design

  9. Review the Network's Design

  10. Test the Network"

Granted, these ten basic tips are only the tip of the iceberg, and there are many steps involved in creating your own Cisco network. Each network will have variables, because upgrades are inevitable due to new technology  around every corner. Remember too, networks are built in layers, so when upgrades occur, it could only involve one layer of your network.

Summary

Ron Gilster's book is packed with easy to understand Networking protocols and tips. He is an expert in CCNA, A+, Network+, I-Net+, AAGG, MBA, and coauthored CCNA For Dummies.
